Movers

  • Dec. 25th, 2009 at 11:59 AM
Anyone have any recommendations for a moving company? I'm moving to Oakland from Washington County, but have to do it in two days (the 28th and the 29th), and I just don't have the manpower right now.

Mechanic (tomorrow)

  • Dec. 25th, 2009 at 7:09 AM
First, merry christmas to those of you celebrating!

I live in Michigan now, but am visiting friends for the holidays (yay!). On 279, the exhaust system on my 88 Corolla started making angry noises at me. (I'm just thankful it didn't happen in Bumfuck, OH). Does anyone have any mechanic recommendations? I did search the archives, but I was hoping someone knew of someone in (or close to) the North Side.

Thank you!!!

Vet open over the holidays

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 4:59 PM
A friend of mine sent this info around for pet owners that might have need to visit a vet during the holidays:

Dr. Risa of McKees Rocks Vet Clinic will be open Christmas, New Year's Eve and New Years Day as well as the weekends.

Animals don't stop getting sick because it's a holiday -- and often it's a cause. Yet, while they need urgent care, they may not need a full service trauma unit like those at the ER vets. That's why Dr. Risa has decided to keep her doors open over the holidays. ..... (BTW - Dr Risa worked at an Emergency Clinic for 5 yrs, so she's petty well seen it all.)

Her holiday hours (partial listing):

Christmas Eve -- closed
Christmas Day -- 11-4 (urgent care only)
Sat 12/26 -- 9:30 - 4:30
Sunday 12/27 -- 11-3
New Year's Eve -- 11-3 (urgent care only)
New Year's Day -- 11-3 (urgent care only)
Saturday 1/2 -- 9:30 - 4:30
Sunday 1/3 -- 11-3 (urgent care only)

908 Chartiers Ave
McKees Rocks, PA

Apartment hunting -

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 1:57 PM
I'm looking for a 2 bedroom apartment in the North Side/Manchester/Bellevue area.

I've found some decent, even promising, leads on Craigslist. But I figured I would post here to see if anyone knew anything.

I really enjoy the idea of living on California Ave.

Anyone have any leads?
Headline: Wine Kiosks To Be Added At 100 Pa. Supermarkets

Sweet! Sounds like a (small) step in the right direction!

Posted: 9:42 am EST December 23, 2009
HARRISBURG, Pa. -- More than 100 Pennsylvania grocery stores are expected to be getting vending machines that sell wine.

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board says the kiosks could be operating at all the stores by the middle of 2010.

Board spokesman Nicholas Hays says the kiosks can carry up to 500 bottles of as many as 50 wines.

Awesome! One less store to stop in possibly.

Patrons would slide a driver's license into the machine to prove they are 21 or older.

Ok - makes sense.

A camera would also ensure that the person and the license match.
Wonder how many false readings it will get? Seems kind of stupid.

The buyer would also have to breath into a device that would measure blood-alcohol level.

WTF? Seriously? This just went from kind of cool to retarded without passing Go or collecting $200...

Hays says a prototype will arrive in Harrisburg early next year so the technology can be tested.

Then, Kiosks will be piloted at several stores in the Harrisburg area.
I have an idea - why not just let the grocery store sell it? They're letting them sell beer in some stores now, why not the wine too?

Come on Pennsylvania - stop being stuck on stupid.

CCAC Spanish Classes

  • Dec. 22nd, 2009 at 3:49 PM
I'm thinking of taking the non-credit communtiy class to strenghten my ability. However, there's no placement test. Has anyone done this for Spanish or any other lanaguage. I've taken only a semester of Spanish, but at Pitt whose program is super strong. I pick up languages muy rapido and I speak very strong French, which helps me learn Spanish quicker. I've also still got a Spanish 1 text book I can use for reference. All that said am I correct in signing up for the Spanish 2 class?

Another restaurant post...

I was wondering if anyone could direct me to a list of restaurants that will be open ON Christmas Day. The only one I know of for sure is the IHOP. Thanks :)

restaurants for Sunday after Christmas?

  • Dec. 21st, 2009 at 11:23 PM
We are trying to organize a lunch gathering for the Sunday after Christmas, for about 20 people, including kids, and cannot find a place where we can reserve a suitable party room (or similar-type "section of restaurant"). Have called around but am striking out... Does anyone have any venue ideas?

question about jury duty

  • Dec. 21st, 2009 at 3:21 PM
I've been called up for jury duty, beginning on January 27th.

Is there a limit on the number of days that they keep you in the pool, if you're not chosen for a jury?

I'm a teacher and trying to put together lesson plans for the upcoming semester, so it would be good to know.

More on the new to Winter thing -

  • Dec. 21st, 2009 at 3:04 PM
I need awesome snow boots. I fell on my ass a lot last winter because I was wearing rain boots like a retard.

Actually, I've been traipsing around in costco slippers for the last year, which are suprising awesome in the snow except for the not keeping your feet dry part.

I'm looking to spend under $100 (or more like $50 if I can) but I want something that's comfortable and is going to last a long time.

I've been looking at zappos.com, but I was hoping for some suggestions on what to get, or maybe where to buy them.

where to buy green telescope in Pgh

  • Dec. 21st, 2009 at 1:08 PM
.
.
.

Okay, so, my three-year-old suddenly got it in his head that Santa is going to bring him a green telescope for Christmas.

Anyone know where I could find a green telescope in the Pittsburgh region? It doesn't have to be high quality--in fact, I would rather it is not expensive, since as a three-year-old he's not going to appreciate its optical quality anyway.

I have found this on many places online:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12388649&sourceid=13287389233822928260

. . . but it won't get delivered in time. Thus my hope that someone here can tell me if they've seen a green telescope for sale recently in some local store.

It can be any size, shape, or model. A toy telescope is preferred, as I said above.

Thanks!

All season tire suggestions.

  • Dec. 21st, 2009 at 11:02 AM
So I have a toyota camry, and I live at the top of a big hill that they don't seem particularly keen on salting this year and I need new tires but I don't have a lot to spend.

I just moved here a year ago so I'm new to the whole driving in the snow thing and I don't really know much about tires.

My mechanic suggested I just go to Walmart, but their tires have terrible reviews for handling in the snow.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any good affordable tires that would be good for driving up a snowy hill in a small car. (All season tires would be best because I can't afford two sets of tires.)

And there's an article about it in yesterday's New York Times!
